About LaTonya Nix Wiley
LaTonya has more than 20+ years of experience in local government law and providing legal advice to elected and appointed officials while also serving as a reliable and available resource to municipal and county officials charged with carrying out the administrative affairs of their government employer. While in private practice she served as outside employment counsel to a municipal housing authority where she routinely provided legal advice to executive management on all aspects of personnel actions and management.
LaTonya has extensive experience in employment and personnel matters. She has drafted personnel policy provisions and represented local governments in administrative civil service hearings, DOL hearings, EEOC proceedings and defended personnel related claims in state and federal court. LaTonya has also conducted internal investigations on behalf of governing authorities and provided risk analysis assessments based upon applicable local, state, and federal law.
LaTonya has expertise in drafting local ordinances, resolutions, local legislation for approval by the General Assembly and local ballot measures such as SPLOST. She has negotiated and drafted Service Delivery Strategy Agreements, Intergovernmental Agreements and MOUs between local governments and related public agencies such as development authorities.
LaTonya is well-versed in the Open Meetings Act and Open Records Act which has enabled her to provide real-time guidance to local government officials. She has developed and conducted seminars regarding the requirements of the Open Records Act and Open Meetings Act as well as laws pertaining to public bidding, disposal of public property and employment matters such as the Georgia Whistleblower Act, Title VII, the FMLA, USERRA and the ADA.
LaTonya has prosecuted local ordinance violations cited by code enforcement officials and litigated nuisance claims arising from unsafe and dilapidated structures. She has successfully litigated condemnation and zoning matters on behalf of local governments and conducted jury trials in ad valorem tax appeals.
LaTonya was born and raised in Metro Atlanta where she graduated from Frederick Douglas High School. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in both English and Philosophy from Emory University. She received a Juris Doctor from Mercer University School of Law.
LaTonya is a member of the State Bar of Georgia; the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics; and the Ethics Compliance Institute. She is admitted to the Georgia Court of Appeals, the Georgia Supreme Court, and every federal district court in the State of Georgia.
LaTonya is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and volunteers as a lawyer for the non-profit organization EROC which provides resources to college students who have been the victim of abuse on campus. When she is not practicing law, LaTonya enjoys creative writing, watching sports, and spending time with her family.
